Background of the Study
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of mortality worldwide, with unhealthy dietary patterns playing a critical role in disease progression (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The lipid profile, which includes cholesterol levels, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), serves as a key biomarker for cardiovascular health (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024). Diets high in saturated fats, trans fats, and refined sugars have been linked to dyslipidemia and increased CVD risk, whereas diets rich in fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats offer protective benefits (Aliyu & Garba, 2024).
In Niger State, shifting dietary patterns due to urbanization, economic factors, and lifestyle changes have led to an increase in non-communicable diseases, including hypertension and hyperlipidemia (Usman et al., 2024). However, there is limited empirical research analyzing how specific dietary habits impact lipid profiles and cardiovascular health in the region. This study aims to examine dietary patterns among residents of Niger State and their association with lipid metabolism and cardiovascular disease prevalence.
Statement of the Problem
Cardiovascular diseases are a growing health concern in Niger State, yet little attention has been given to the role of dietary patterns in influencing lipid levels and overall heart health (NCDC, 2024). Many residents consume diets high in processed foods, unhealthy fats, and low in fiber, leading to poor lipid regulation and an increased risk of atherosclerosis and hypertension (Ogunleye et al., 2024).
Despite the established relationship between diet and cardiovascular health, there is a lack of localized research exploring dietary influences on lipid profiles among residents of Niger State. Understanding these dietary patterns will help in designing effective nutritional interventions and public health strategies.
Objectives of the Study
1. To analyze dietary patterns among residents of Niger State.
2. To examine the relationship between dietary habits and lipid profile variations.
3. To assess the impact of diet on cardiovascular disease prevalence in Niger State.
Research Questions
1. What are the common dietary patterns among residents of Niger State?
2. How do dietary habits influence lipid profiles and cardiovascular health?
3. What dietary interventions can improve cardiovascular health outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. High intake of unhealthy fats and processed foods leads to adverse lipid profile changes.
2. Poor dietary habits contribute to increased cardiovascular disease prevalence in Niger State.
3. Nutritional awareness and dietary modifications can significantly improve lipid profiles and heart health.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on dietary habits, lipid profile assessments, and cardiovascular disease trends among adults in Niger State. Limitations may include dietary recall biases and variations in individual metabolism affecting lipid profile analysis.
Definitions of Terms
